Jackson"s hit propels Diamondbacks past Brewers
ARIZONA 6, MILWAUKEE 5

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Conor Jackson and the Arizona Diamondbacks
ruined an excellent performance by Manny Parra.

Jackson delivered the game-winning single with none out in the
ninth inning Thursday, lifting the Diamondbacks to a 6-5 victory
over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Arizona scored all of its runs in the ninth for its largest
comeback of the season.

"I'm almost in shock at the way the inning turned out,"
Diamondbacks manager bob Melvin said. "Basically, the way the
inning happened with nobody out, we're thinking we are going to
have to do something to manufacture runs at some point, but we
never really had to."

With the Diamondbacks trailing, 5-4, and runners on second and
third, Jackson bounced a single up the middle off Brewers closer
Salomon Torres (4-2) to plate Justin Upton and Orlando Hudson
with the tying and winning runs.

"It wasn't a pretty thing, but it will go down as a line drive
tomorrow in the book," Jackson said. "He was throwing me
sinkers down and in, and in that situation, I was just trying to
put the ball in play. I fouled some good pitches off and put
myself back in a good hitter's count at 2-2. Fortunately, I got
one up the middle."

Rookie Leo Rosales (1-0), in just his fifth career appearance,
gave up two hits in the top of the ninth but still collected his
first major league win.

The Diamondbacks, who had been shut down by Parra over six
innings and blanked by two relievers through eight, sent seven
men to the plate in the last half of the ninth to get their
record back to .500 (43-43).

Milwaukee reliever Guillermo Mota started the inning and gave up
two singles and a walk to load the bases. Brewers manager Ned
Yost brought in Brian Shouse, who promptly surrendered a
three-run double by Chad Tracy that drew Arizona within 5-3.

"I wanted to hit his fastball," Tracy said. "I didn't want any
part of his slider. Typically, he's started me out in the past
with fastballs kind of in. He gave me exactly what I was
looking for and I put a good swing on it."

Yost then called upon Torres, who gave up a single by Upton to
put runners on first and third before Hudson's double down the
left field line scored Tracy, making it a one-run game.

"The D-Backs put the ball in play," Yost said. "Shouse came in
and tried to go down and away and made a bad pitch - the one he
made was down and in to Tracy. Salomon just couldn't get it to
stop either. It's just one of those innings."

Jackson, who had been 0-for-7 lifetime against Torres, then
produced the game-winning hit.

"I was going to succeed or fail with my best pitch, and that was
my sinker," Torres said. "The one Hudson hit down the line, a
great piece of hitting. The other by Upton was a blooper.

"Maybe my location could have been maybe a little bit better.
It's just one of those things where you have to just shake it
off and go at it tomorrow or the next time an opportunity to
close arises. It was a very tough lose to us today."

The comeback wasted an outstanding performance by Parra, who
scattered four singles over six innings. The lefthander, who
struck out four, was looking to win his seventh straight start.

"The results were not what we wanted," Parra said. "I battled
again, but it was not the prettiest thing because of my three
walks. But I'll take it. It's a positive step for me
personally, I guess."

The victory also got Brandon Webb off the hook. The 2006
National League Cy Young Award winner allowed five runs, nine
hits and two walks but avoided a third loss in his last four
decisions.

"Once again, it was a battle for me," Webb said. "I felt like
my release point and mechanics were obviously not where I wanted
them to be. Everything was up in the zone. I couldn't make a
big pitch when I need it. It seems like the big innings are
killing me, and once again, that was the case."

J.J. Hardy went 4-for-5 with a homer and Mike Cameron also
belted a controversial two-run shot in the sixth that just
skimmed the foul pole in left, giving the Brewers a 5-0 lead.
